Hidden Gems of the Lakes: Wreay Woods

If you have an appreciation for wildlife and enjoy woodland trails, then you will love this walk. The route through Wreay Woods starts from the village of Wreay, not too far from Carlisle. The terrain can be described as easy-to-moderate, and walkers simply must take their camera. There's a good chance of seeing all kinds of birds (sometimes if you are very lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the esteemed Kingfisher), as well as all sorts of wild flowers. We managed to steal a peek at a heron fishing, but he was too quick to snap. We did this walk on Saturday as I really wanted to see the bluebells. The walk takes you along the River Peterill, which was crystal clear, and right through the Wreay Wildlife Reserve - definitely worth a visit if you come to the area. http://www.cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk/reserves/wreay-woods  To obtain visitor tickets for the River Peterill, simply follow this  link http://www.penrithanglers.co.uk/Visitor-tickets.html.
